23 | Why Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
A single sentence from Jesus forms the core structural essence of the Gospel: "I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6). This is not a poetic metaphor; it is a complete Soteriological Ontology (the nature of salvation). To understand this, one must first grasp why God had to become flesh, why salvation could not be accomplished remotely, and why only Jesus can reconnect a severed life.
Because God loves the world, He had to intervene personally before the final judgment. To save "Man in the flesh," God had to enter human flesh—into our pain, our limitations, our language, and our systems of understanding. Only by "becoming Man" could God execute salvation within the human world. Thus, the Incarnation of Jesus Christ serves three specific purposes: Atonement (Life) | Demonstration (Way) | Revelation (Truth).
I. Jesus is the Life: Atonement Reconnecting the Source
Sin is not a tally of deeds, but a rupture of life. Because of the Ego and the Dividing Mind, humanity is severed from God; the spirit withers, and the heart closes. We become defined by scarcity, competition, hostility, and fear. Though God provided the Law to prevent our rapid destruction, humanity—driven by that very fear and greed—inevitably broke the Law.
The Law cannot be abolished, and the judgment cannot be ignored. The rupture cannot repair itself. Therefore, someone had to bear the cost of the breach and the consequences of the violation. Jesus became Man to enter into death, pain, and limitation—bearing the cost of the guilty as an innocent substitute. Through Him, the severed life is reconnected to the Source. Life is not earned through effort or attained through asceticism; it can only be bestowed. Thus, He is the Life—the only one capable of restoring our vital connection.
II. Jesus is the Way: The Demonstration of the "True Man"
The universe is a projection of God’s will, but humanity did not know how that Will acts within the human sphere. God’s principles are in Heaven, but Man lives on Earth. Without a demonstration, humanity would never know the "True Mode of Life." Jesus entered the flesh—hunger, tears, suffering, temptation, time, and death—not for the sake of the experience itself, but to demonstrate how a human life aligns with the heart of God. He showed us how to love, forgive, pray, sacrifice, and walk in truth. He did not merely point to the road; He walked it and said, "Follow me." He is the Way—the living pattern of the Father's intent.
III. Jesus is the Truth: Unveiling the Reality of the World and Man
The root of all sin is not "wickedness," but the Dividing Mind and Ego-centrism. The root of these, in turn, is ignorance of the Truth—what the East calls "Avidya" (ignorance) and theology calls "Darkness." Humanity does not understand the nature of the world, the essence of life, or the structure of the soul. Jesus came to pull back the veil, revealing the Truth of God’s being and Man’s reality: God is not a distant judge, but a Father bringing His children home; Man is not a material accident destined for death, but a spirit possessing the breath of God. He dissolved the illusions that cloak our existence. Therefore, He is the Truth.
IV. Why the Three Must Be One
- If there were Atonement (Life) without Demonstration (Way), man would not know how to live.
- If there were Demonstration (Way) without Revelation (Truth), man would not know why he lives.
- If there were Revelation (Truth) without Atonement (Life), man would have no power to live it out. Jesus must simultaneously be Life (Redemption), Way (Demonstration), and Truth (Revelation). These three dimensions are mutually dependent; without any one of them, salvation is incomplete. They are three dimensions of a single Reality.
V. The Incarnation as the Necessary Mode of Rescue
Why must Jesus be Man? Because salvation must be accomplished within the human dimension. If God saved us in a "Divine way," we could not comprehend it; if He saved us in a "Heavenly way," we could not follow it. Only by saving us in a "Human way" can we see, hear, touch, imitate, believe, and follow. The Incarnation is the only possible mode of rescue. This is why the Way, the Truth, and the Life must appear simultaneously in the person of Jesus.
Summary | Original Doctrine 23
- Jesus is Life: Through His atonement, He restores our connection to the Source.
- Jesus is the Way: He is the living demonstration of a life pleasing to God.
- Jesus is the Truth: He unveils the true nature of God, Man, and the Universe.
- The Incarnation is Mandatory: Salvation must be human-shaped to rescue humans.
- The Unified Structure: Atonement, Demonstration, and Revelation constitute the complete architecture of salvation.
Conclusion: Jesus does not merely point to the Way, the Truth, and the Life; He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He came not to teach us how to strive, but to bring us back to the Source.
