50|Why Humility is the Fundamental Mark of a Christian
Jesus said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3). He also said: “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12).
This demonstrates that the most fundamental spiritual mark of a Christian is not baptism, nor attendance at church activities, but Humility. Because:
- Without humility, there is no true faith;
- Without humility, there is no genuine surrender;
- Without humility, one cannot bear spiritual fruit.
(1) Baptism is a Ritual, but Humility is the Entrance to the Kingdom
Baptism is indeed important; it is our public declaration to the world: “I belong to Christ.” But baptism is not:
- An automatic "Eternal Salvation" button;
- A religious certificate for self-legitimation;
- A proof of spiritual maturity.
Scripture says: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith...” (Romans 5:1). Justification is the beginning; afterward, the Spirit must "make us righteous" within. And the first step of this formation is not power, nor knowledge, nor passion, but Humility. Only the humble are willing to admit: “I need to be guided.”
(2) Why is Humility the Vital "Foundation" of the Christian Life?
This can be written as a spiritual equation: Humility → Small Self → No Self → The Prerequisite for Surrender.
The sequence of spiritual life is usually:
- Humility
- Surrender
- Trust
- Bearing Fruit
- Manifesting the Work of God
If the first step is missing, none of the subsequent steps can truly occur. A proud person cannot surrender; a self-satisfied person cannot rely on God; a self-righteous person cannot sincerely repent. Scripture says the root of the Devil's fall was Pride. Almost all spiritual decay begins here.
(3) The Mark of a False Christian: Religious Arrogance and the Pharisaical Spirit
The ones Jesus rebuked most severely were not the tax collectors or prostitutes, but the Pharisees. Because they:
- Observed rituals but lacked humility;
- Knew the scriptures but lacked life;
- Were self-righteous but did not truly know God.
Therefore, we hold that: "If one claims to be a Christian yet is filled with pride, conceit, and condescension, they are a false Christian—a Pharisee." One can read the entire Bible, pray, give testimony, and attend every meeting, yet if they judge, despise others, and exalt themselves in their heart, they are structurally a Pharisee rather than a disciple.
(4) Why is Humility the "Fruit Before the Fruits"?
The fruits of the Spirit are: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. But the "root" of all these fruits is one: Humility.
- Without humility, one will not accept the Spirit's guidance;
- Without humility, one will not admit their own finitude;
- Without humility, one will not lay down their cleverness and plans;
- Without humility, it is impossible for God to truly reign as King in the heart.
Humility is not a "docile personality," but a spiritual posture: being open to God and acknowledging Him as Lord.
