78| Art Is the New Way of Preaching
God granted humanity free will, yet most people have almost never been truly free in their lives. This is because our likes, pursuits, fears, and self-positioning are almost entirely shaped by "Memes." Memes are: the values instilled by family, school, and society; the suggestions given by peers, media, and public opinion; and the narratives repeated by the ideologies and cultural industries of the age. Memes are the modern version of the "collective unconscious" and the most powerful force shaping the human heart. One cannot simply "escape memes"; one can only be reshaped by new and higher ones.
(1) Culture, Art, and Media Are the "Spiritual Food" of the Modern Era
In the age of screens, the internal world of people is almost entirely shaped by: film and television; short videos and variety shows; novels and online literature; pop songs and games; and social media topics. These ultimately decide: what kind of life you long for; what you fear and loathe; what you believe "success" and "love" to be; and how you understand "meaning" and "value." Modern man is no longer primarily shaped by religion, but by the cultural industry. Therefore: the decay of civilization begins in memes, and the renewal of civilization must also start with memes.
(2) Why Does Contemporary Culture Manufacture Scarcity, Comparison, and Fear?
Because the cultural industry pursues attention, not truth. And attention is most easily hooked by: anger and hatred; lust and curiosity; comparison and superiority; revenge and aggression; and rapid stimulation with fleeting pleasure. This forms a "Dopamine Cultural Structure": the stronger the stimulation, the deeper the emptiness; the higher the frequency, the greater the anxiety. It captures "fallen human nature" rather than the spirituality God placed within us.
(3) Two Kinds of Art: One Feeds Dopamine, One Nourishes the Soul
Human attention can be satisfied by two entirely different types of content:
- Short-term, Dopamine-style Stimulation: Rapid satisfaction, intense stimulation, followed by deeper emptiness and anxiety; highly addictive and difficult to escape.
- Long-term, Endorphin-style Resonance: Touching the soul and triggering reflection; allowing for purification, growth, and becoming better; bringing profound and lasting joy. The second kind is not unpopular; it simply requires more sophisticated storytelling. In fact, many truly popular works—such as Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, and Zootopia—output deep values and hope. What we need to do is wrap the true spirit of Jesus—non-possession, love, obedience, humility, and mercy—within good stories, music, and imagery to enter the core of the cultural industry and reshape the memes of the heart.
(4) The Cultural Principle Given by Jesus: Using Stories to Convey Truth
Jesus did not write academic papers or establish theoretical schools; He did one thing that was extremely simple yet eternally effective: He told stories. Parables are the highest form of memes: Truth is wrapped in a delicious narrative sugar-coating; wisdom penetrates defenses in the gentlest way; and the listener is shaped by truth without realizing it. This provides us with a clear mission path: using good stories to carry good content, letting the Gospel flow naturally within culture.
(5) The New Era Mission: Rebuilding the Cultural Structure of Humanity with "Right-View Memes"
If the world is to truly become better, we cannot only expect "individuals to become better," because humans themselves are products of memes. We must:
- Bravely enter the cultural field instead of only rotating within religious circles;
- Create new memes that point toward the Light;
- Replace decadent content with stories, art, and substance rather than simply opposing it;
- Gently penetrate the hearts of the masses with spiritual narratives;
- Allow people to absorb Truth with pleasure rather than forcing them to accept preaching. This is not censorship or anti-culture, but: rewriting the "spiritual operating system" of humanity with love and wisdom. The ultimate goal is to let culture become the soil for the Gospel and let memes become the ladder that leads people home.
