79|Spiritual Family Ranks Higher Than Blood Lineage
We have been taught since childhood that parents, siblings, and the clan are the naturally most intimate relationships. Yet Jesus said: “For whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:50). This is a shocking reset of "kinship." Jesus did not negate blood ties but pointed out that true kinship comes not from genes, but from the soul; the spiritual family ranks higher than the biological clan.
(1) Jesus Redefines Kinship: Spiritual Connection Over Genetic Connection
When His family came looking for Him, Jesus did not immediately rise; instead, He pointed to those listening and obeying the Word, saying: “These are my family.” This was not coldness but a declaration: blood ties are a biological connection, while faith is an eternal connection. Genes can ensure we are born into the same home, but they cannot guarantee we move in the same direction.
(2) Why Blood Ties Alone Do Not Constitute True Intimacy
There are at least four reasons:
- Genes do not guarantee consistent values. Siblings from the same parents may differ completely, with one pursuing truth and another pursuing pure utility.
- Blood ties easily foster partiality and division. The sentiment of "my family is most important" easily evolves into injustice and coldness toward the outside world.
- Familialism easily manufactures structural injustice. When family interests conflict with righteousness, traditional cultures often choose the family. But in the Kingdom, righteousness is above blood, and truth is above kinship.
- Blood ties can sometimes become a bond of fear. Many spend their lives driven by parental expectations and clan pressure rather than by a calling. This is not love, but a shackle.
(3) Why Does Jesus Emphasize That Spiritual Belonging Is Deeper Than Blood?
Because: the soul is eternal, while genes are temporary; spiritually connected people can support each other toward the light, while those only sharing genes may drag each other down and exhaust one another. Jesus did not mean "do not love your parents"; He meant "do not let blood ties rank higher than God." When the clan is placed above God, righteousness is sacrificed and the soul is bound.
(4) How, Then, Should We View Our Parents and Siblings?
- Love them, but do not be controlled by them. Jesus respected and cared for Mary, yet He did not deviate from His mission due to kinship.
- Offer affection, but do not fall into familialism. True filial piety is not appeasement, but allowing parents the opportunity to see the Truth and the Light.
- The highest form of kinship: leading your family toward God. "Harmony" is not superficial peace, but placing the relationship back under God’s order.
- Acknowledge kinship as an entrustment, not possession. Family members are people entrusted to us by God to love, not our ultimate destination.
